A set of "accurate" index listings is a very important research tool when searching for images or general information for individual U-boats. |
| In many cases we know that we have specific information regarding a certain U-Boat,
whether it be a photo or other info - the question arises, what book contains that particular photo or which book
has inf on on U-xxx? Many of the "included" book indexes located in the Table Of Contents, many times have major errors or omissions. ALL of these published index tables that are listed, have all been "physically" verified..... |
| Note - there always exists the possibility of some minor errors in the developed tables. |

This index scheme allows the lookup of specific U-Boats in the directories of the indexed books. The lookup result will be a photo, illustration, map or related fact regarding the U-Boat in question, utilizing the search feature(s) mentioned below. Listed book indexes (.htm) have all been redone to included ONLY WW II German U-Boats, Japanese I and RO boats and Italian submarines have been listed. |
| There are two methods that can be employed to find the information
that you desire - the first is described below in steps 1a] to 4a]. The second method would be to use the onsite search function as described in steps 1b]. |
| Note: I am using WIN XP Pro SP3 for the following examples. |
1a] Firstly......download
the "Raw Book Index"......and save to a seperate directory on your PC.....Un-Zip / Un-RAR the master
directory  2a] Right click on the folder "Indexes-htm" and select "Search" from the drop-down menu - Select U-515 to locate - this is what you should have so far  3a] Next lick on the "Search" box.The result of the "Search" shows 63 total entries for U-515 (only a partial listing is shown - scroll down to view complete result)  4a] Next we want to find where U-515 appears in "Hoyt - The Sea Wolves.htm". Right click and select "Open" from the drop-down menu. The .htm file will now open in a browser window, displaying the contents of the directory for "Hoyt - The Sea Wolves.htm". |

| 1b] An alternate method would be to download a seperate software program, in place of the Widows search function, such as "Super Text Search" as described below and search "Indexes-htm" with a stand-alone program. |

| In the above shown examples, (P)XXX indicates the page of a photo location. (P)123F would mean that the page in question is 6 pages after page 123. Also (P) could indicate an actual U-Boat photo, a reference illustration, map or a U-Boat related photo (CO, ship victim, etc.). |

An alternate search method as mentioned above in 1b] can be used: Galcott Super Text Search software (shareware) is one example. Galcott Super Text Search is a utility which enables you to quickly search files for text. You can search anything from a single file to an entire drive for any text you need to find. Both plain text files (program source code, batch files, HTML files, etc.) and binary files (word processing and spreadsheet documents, PDF files, databases, even executable programs) can be searched, as can files archived inside ZIP, CAB or RAR files. In addition to simple searches for words or phrases, the program allows you to use regular expressions (as found in Grep utilities, which will be familiar to the more technical among you) to perform more advanced searches including wild cards and various types of pattern matching. After performing a search, files containing the search text can be viewed, edited or opened in their associated applications. Search results can also be printed or exported.
